Adams's Chart of History: A Chronology of Ancient, Modern, and Biblical History Accordian Style Fold Out NEW! I've been recommending Hull's Wall Chart of History for a long time. But it is virtually impossible to find one that is not revised (adding evolutionary material.) This is just coming out. It is the original that came before Hull's. I just found out that the author was a cousin of John Quincy Adams. Based on Ussher's The Annals of the World and featuring colorful artwork representing people and events from creation to the late 19th century, this vintage biblical and historical timeline was originally published in 1871! Post it on your walls and let it inform your kids' imaginations as they learn. Features 21 foldout 13" x 28" panels. |

A Guide to American Christian Education for the Home |
Encyclopedia of Bible Truths: Social Studies This book won't teach you how to teach HisStory, but it will help you find Biblical Truths and Scriptures to help
you understand a Biblical perspective of HisStory (and in every subject you teach, with the other
books in this series ). If you want some help finding the scriptures related to HisStory you will want to get this book. |

Encyclopedia of Bible Truths, 4 Volumes By Ruth C. Haycock / Assoc. Of Christian Schools This series integrates the Bible into virtually every curriculum area and is an outstanding resource for lesson preparation, research, and project completion. The series is formatted by content area; each section lists biblical concepts and background for that subject. Scripture references and scriptures that pertain to those concepts are then provided. |

Teaching and Learning America's Christian History: The Principle Approach By Rosalie J. Slater / F.A.C.E. For those just wanting to dig deeper and learn more, or wanting THE Principle Approach® instruction, rather than our L.E.D. adaptations. Great teaching guide (with 3 different plans) for studying and teaching the primary source documents in Christian History of the Constitution Vol. 1 (CHOC I) and resource for understanding PA's 7 Principles of American History and Government. 378 pages, hardcover. |
Rudiments of America's Christian History and Government Great resource for learning the Biblical Foundations of History, Government, and our United States. Utilizes T&L and CHOC I above, and The Christian History of the American Revolution: Consider & Ponder (C&P), and Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary (also available online). So, if you get this, you will also need the others. But we feel this is a most valuable study for Youth just entering their formal study years and adults learning how to study and teach by Biblical principles. |
Webster's American Dictionary of the English Language, 1828 Edition |
Marshall Foster's workshops are also great. Be sure to go if you get a chance, or check out his resources at his website. His video is listed below. |
Real Resources for HisStory |
HisStory Worldview & Church HisStoryFrancis Schaeffer's How Should We Then Live? is the "must have" for looking at history from a biblical worldview. History Through the Eyes of Faith By Ron Wells / Harpercollins Publishing is another world history overview we enjoyed.
Our favorite one volume church history is Sketches from Church History. It's a short (aprox. 250 pages) easy to read introductory overview that covers all of church history up through the 19th century for youth or adults.
This one is a history study of the Old Testament, using your Bible as the text.

Universal History:CLP has a nice short overview of HisStory from a Providential viewpoint that can be used to introduce children to HisStory, History for Little Pilgrims. To go with this, they also have a color book (and teacher's guide that we have not used). For yourself and youth 6000 years of Earth History by Doug Phillips provides a quick overview. The next book is a little different. A Christian Almanac is a"Dictionary of Days Celebrating History Most Significant People and Events". There is a one page story for each day of the year about a person or event Christian history, and then a list of other notable things that happened on that day in history.
Charles Coffin wrote a series of American History books in the latter 1800's, before revisionists were changing history to fit their agenda. But this first one tells the story of Liberty from the Magna Charta to the Pilgrims, so is mainly European History of that time period. Others in the series are listed below, under American History, but they too weave in universal history. (See further description below, in American History section. Also listed on our "time period" study pages.)
Want something a little deeper? Check out The Annals of the World: James Ussher's Classic Survey of World History, Book and CD-Rom, written in the 17th century by James Ussher, now updated to modern English by Master Books, this tome covers history from Creation to 70 A.D. Or, how about the works of Josephus a first century historian. I love Emma Willard's Providential Universal History, written in the mid-1800's, Universal History in Perspective. It is an old book, and has not been republished. I've found very few copies for sale, especially at affordable prices or in non-falling apart condition. Mine is falling apart, so I was copying the pages for our teens to read until a friend found it available online to down from google books - here. We have enjoyed 2 series of history "stories" told from a Christian viewpoint. Diana Waring's What in the World's Going on Here? audio series and other audio CD's bring life to HisStory as she tells the stories of times past in an interesting and engaging way. Mystery of History books contain short stories outlining the course of history. You can read more about both of them near the bottom of this page, as well as 2 other literature based history guides. |
American HisStory:The following provide a good introduction to studying American History. America's Providential History by Stephen McDowell & Mark Beliles is the book we think needs to be given to every youth and adult in America! Buy several for graduation gifts. This book will lay a solid foundation for your American History studies. A Documentary Sourcebook and Teacher's Guide are available from Providence Foundation. Another book we love, that is good to begin with is The American Covenant: The Untold Story by Marshall Foster. It is available from The Mayflower Institute. Of Plymouth Plantation by William Bradford is THE story of our founding by one who was actually there. All other stories of the Pilgrims should be compared to this. Again, Emma Willard wrote an excellent Providential History of America in the mid-1800's, Abridged History of the United States; or, Republic of America. I have only found it as a free pdf download. Click the title for download information.
Story of Liberty seriesCharles Coffin's series was written in the latter 1800's, before revisionists were changing history to fit their agenda. It is more Universal than Marshall's (below). He tells us what was happening all over the world, yet with a focus of how it was affecting America. These three cover from the Magna Charta to the War for Independence, but additional books in this series are available from Mantle Ministries or the texts can be found online. This is our "must have" series for Youth.
The Light and the Glory seriesPeter Marshall & David Manuel's series takes us from Columbus's discovery of America to the Civil War looking through the eyes of Providence. The regular version is for jr. high to adult, or as a Family Read Aloud. The Children's version is for younger children as a Read Aloud, or upper elementary could read on their own. There are also activity books for the children's versions. We prefer to balance the third book with other resources giving the perspective from the South.
Basic History of the United States - 6 Vol. This series by Clarence Carson looks deeper at U.S. History than the
above, from a great cause and effect perspective. They aren't quite as "living" but are worth the read. They are for high school and above, and cover up to 2001. |

History Guides/Programs2 types of other history resources are listed below. Although they aren't a part of Lifestyle Education through Discipleship™, we are very familiar with them, and believe they can be of some help to some people, especially when just beginning this journey, and looking for a little more hand-holding. The first 2 resources are guides to using literature to study history. Both are from a Christian perspective. But they are set up differently. Both are published as series based on time-period. Literature based Curriculum GuidesHistory "Programs" that have good storiesThe 2 series below contain story Overviews of HisStory from a Christian Worldview. They weave together what's going on with God's people and the world in general, and can be interesting additions to your L.E.D. studies, by using them along with Real Books. Although both the What in the World's Going On Here? audios and the Mystery of History books below are appropriate for the whole family, if you are only getting one or the other, we'd say get the Mystery of History if you are working with mainly young children, and Diana's audios if you are mainly working with older children. The books that go along with Diana Waring's audios are not necessary if you are using L.E.D. methods and guides. Although the outline of the time period and the list of living books to go along with it, (in the original books) were helpful to those unfamiliar with history chronology, Diana has revised the books, and we prefer the original verion, as the new versions are more textbook-ish.[UPDATE: The books have been revised again by Answers in Genesis. I've been told the audios remain the same though.] Diana also has many other enjoyable resources – click here for more Diana Waring resources.
The Mystery of History books contain quick to read stories to take you through an overview of HisStory. These are clear enough that your younger students will understand. Again, we don't use all the activities that are included, but instead just read the stories, expand our chosen ones with real, living literature, and apply our L.E.D. methods of learning.
